It was important that the space would carry out the vision of the homeowners while complementing the scale of its neighbors.  In response, we developed a plan to split the overall volume of the home into two separate, but attached, structures. Then using an existing subtle stepping of topography on the site we were able to take a tiered programmatic approach. This resulted in a sequence of staggered spaces that are each contained within a similar traditional New England style “saltbox.”  After entering the home, you are directed to ascend the stairwell at half level intervals—moving from more public to more private spaces, ending at an isolated & contemplative studio space.  This kinetic movement between each form is displayed by a modern glass prism containing a floating stair with a slatted wood screen wall to show the progressive phases of motion similar to that of a zoetrope.
