After School Architecture

After School Architecture

AoDK has spearheaded an after school program in collaboration with a nearby Lakewood middle school where students get exposure to the broad spectrum of architecture while getting their hands ‘dirty’ designing their ideal home.  The intent of the program is centered on this quote from Albert Einstein, “Logic will get you from A to B, imagination will take you everywhere.” As knowledge is becoming more easily accessible, what we do with that knowledge is key, creativity paired with knowledge is essential to imagination. Each week, the group of 6-8 students walked down the street to our office and first got to hear a short presentation on a wide array of architectural topics, including architectural styles, prominent architects, form vs. function, and social and environmental responsibility. Then they got to work on implementing those ideas by designing their own house.  At the end of the 10 week program, the students presented to their parents and their school teachers what they learned and how they implemented those ideas into the house they designed.
